dilate, on vinyl

image

you can never underestimate the power of music. the soundtrack to certain snapshots of life are just as important as the actual events.

ani difranco, for example.

i first discovered her music in 1995, when i was in college. the first song i heard was “32 flavors.” it changed my life.

i went and bought all of her previous CDs, and have continued my journey with her music to this day. (last year’s which side are you on? is amazing, by the way.)

the first new ani album i bought was dilate, in 1996. i remember driving to best buy to get the CD at 10 am on its release day. i would have gone to papa jazz, but it opened at 11 am. i was a bit obsessive at the time.

to many ani fans, dilate is her best album. that’s saying a lot, considering she has 23 albums to date.

she recently announced that her older records are going to be remastered and re-released on vinyl. i got my copy recently, and it’s perfect.

“done wrong” makes me think of late nights with nothing but headphones. “shameless” makes me think of walking through campus. “outta me, onto you” makes me think of  taking a road trip with my friends to athens, ga. the whole album brings me back to 1996.

i’m hoping she puts educated guess and/or to the teeth on vinyl, as well. those are my favorites.

my favorite albums of 2012:

1. fiona apple: the idler wheel …

2. dirty projectors: swing lo magellan

3. godspeed you! black emperor: allelujah don’t bend ascend

4. cloud nothings: attack on memory

5. ani difranco: which side are you on?

6. chelsea wolfe: unknown rooms: a collection of acoustic songs

7. memotone: i sleep. at waking

8. theesatisfaction: awe naturale

9. jack white: blunderbuss

10. flying lotus: until the quiet comes

others: st. vincent + david byrne - “love this giant,” andrew bird - “break it yourself,” public enemy - “most of my heroes still don’t appear on no stamp,” the corin tucker band - “kill my blues,” swans - “the seer,”  smashing pumpkins - “oceania,” the xx - “coexist,” anais mitchell - “young man in america”

the weekend in asheville was perfect. jordan and i stayed at an amazing little cabin at willow winds and also explored the blue ridge parkway, which was absolutely magnificent.

see the first batch of photos from the weekend here.

i took some photos and wrote a review of The Green Door, the new restaurant by the Roti Rolls food truck folks, for The Digitel. read it here!
