Jack McCray was a friend, brother and mentor. He was also the definition of cool. He was the embodiment of the spirit of Charleston - I will miss seeing him at Charleston Grill, I’ll miss his laugh, I’ll miss his guidance and professionalism
His jazz column was the smartest thing I did as an editor. I often got positive feedback about the column from everyday folks - in grocery stores, on the street and elsewhere. People connected to Jack. Jack connected to people.
I rejoice in the fact that his spirit is home. But we will all miss him so much.
these doughnuts + my new camera + a sunny day in charleston = heaven
“the present presence.”
(written for the stage. audio/video will be soon)
people keep saying to live each day
like it’s your last,
but i say
live like it’s your first.
come out of your mind
like you came out of the womb
and open yourself
to the beauty of
unknowing.
be present in the presence.
the future is now
and you wrote the book.
there is no catalog of worry,
no price plan for prayer,
no index for indecisiveness,
no glossy magazine for glory.
you are here.
you learn how to walk without worry,
when questions wash over you
like memories
before you wake up
to the answers
and realize
you were free all along -
free to just be and
breathe
instead of
holding your breath
for death
to grab a hold
of your soul
and force you into another
world of unknowing.
people always say to live each day
like it’s your last.
why not live like it’s your first?
redefine what it means
to be beautiful,
taste wine for the first time
and age gracefully
without collecting dust
on the shelf of
your mind.
buzzzz.
beehive’s first buzzworthy event was amazing. there was a lot of love energy in the air. it was groovy that my first art show was shared with people who weren’t trying to one-up each other. we were there as a collective.
for that, i thank stephanie burt, the queen bee. she knows how to make an event happen without compromising her vision. she also knows how to relate to people really well. i never got the impression that she was overwhelmed, even though i know it took a lot to pull last night’s event off.

the crowds came quickly and stayed around for the whole night. any doubts that the terrace could throw a party were quickly thrown out of mind once the people started flowing in and out of the theater with ease. it was great.

i sold three pieces! i was really excited to see people’s reactions to the artwork. it was a good mental exercise for me. those pieces haven’t come out to play yet, so it felt good to show folks what i’ve been working on.

i can’t wait to help stephanie out with the next one. and thank you, digitel and the city paper, for your support.
