albums i’m listening to right now:

* Savages, silence yourself: was turned on to them by Pitchfork, and have been obsessed with the record ever since. It’s really raw. Almost sounds like a demo. There’s an 80s garage band vibe to it, and it kinda sorta reminds me of PJ Harvey’s “rid of me.” ish. anyway, it’s super good.

* Emma Louise, vs head vs heart: Track 3, “Boy,” came on WUSC last month and it made me stop in my tracks. sonically, it sounds like “everything in its right place,” by radiohead. musically, its warmth reminded me of Ida. luckily, the rest of the album is just as good. it’s the kind of music I used to listen to on headphones when I was in college. I get a nostalgic feeling when I hear this record, even though it’s new. bravo, Emma.

* Yeah Yeah Yeahs, mosquito: (worst. album. cover. ever.) The music kicks ass, though. Not sure why it’s been getting negative reviews - I think it’s just as good as their early work. the title track and “under the earth” are my favorites. There’s a deep substance to this album - it’s like they added more meat to it. Very layered, very atmospheric. I love.

* The National, trouble will find me: instant classic. almost too good to talk about. then again, i’ve only listened to the album twice - the newness of it will wear off soon. BUT, it comes close to the perfection that was “high violet.” they’ve made a sound all their own. i love love love “fireproof” and “don’t swallow the cap.”

iphone shot of the jazz house on monday. we put on a very intimate show for JAC Week. it felt like an old school jazz club from the 70s. (not that i’ve ever been to an old school jazz club from the 70s, mind you.)

they asked me about art, and I talked about Joni Mitchell. Go Figure

album of the moment? “rivers arms” by Balmorhea. i discovered this band because i thought the album’s cover art was cool. i took a chance on the record, and found out that only 500 copies of the vinyl were made (!).

the music is minimalistic and instrumental. you could call the band “post rock” or “classical.” i simply call it “good.”

it’s been on repeat since i got it. highly recommended.
